The authors of a paper published in Nature Communications claim to have discovered a way to make jet fuel from C02. The process takes CO2 out of the air, and converts it into jet fuel, which is then emitted by the plane in flight. As there is no need to extract oil from the ground, the process is carbon neutral.
If it is scalable, cost-effective, and works as advertised, this could be a very important breakthrough.

I hope this comes to fruition. Prior to COVID, aircraft emissions were increasing rapidly. Presumably, the trend will continue post-COVID. If flights were carbon-neutral, that would be a huge improvement. Furthermore, assuming it's identical to normal jet fuel, there would be no need to modify the aircraft, thereby increasing the potential speed of adoption.
